Ah,the NEW year! With all the focus of resolutions and new beginningsGracefulgrit Elderly Parent Caregiver Coaching, I am declaring my own new direction.

“Hi, I’m Julie of Gracefulgrit Coaching and I am a consultant and coach for elderly parent caregivers wanting guidance and support while navigating the logistics and emotions of this challenging journey.”

I am finding that those of us involved in elderly parent caregiving have such shared common experience that:

The only difference between elderly parent caregivers who are feeling:

  • trapped
  • resentful
  • overwhelmed
  • exhausted
  • alone

and those who are at ease IS:

elderly parent caregivers who are at ease have discovered how and why to :

  • Position their needs at the TOP of the to do list.
  • Provide care with purpose and intent rather than duty.
  • Create freedom for themselves within the caregiving schedule.
  • Detach from resentments towards “delinquent” siblings and family members.
  • Say NO – without guilt- and open up more YES for themselves.
  • Grant themselves permission to live their own life more fully.
  • “Weed out” what is unnecessary in their situation- guilt, other’s opinions, negative habits, ineffective routines, toxic relationships.
  • Schedule NON- negotiable time for themselves
  • Change resignation of their role into acceptance

Generally speaking, I am in the second group. I am currently at ease with my continuing role of elderly parent  caregiver . This is not to say that I don’t have some backsliding BUT…. I know my role and I am comfortable in the “skin” of what it requires.

I practice empathy- both with elderly parents and myself.

And there are limits to healthy caregiving empathy- I now know what I need to do and how and when I can respond.

http://yourtango.com recently posed some of the risks of empathy. Although it is the platform of elderly parent caregiving , indiscriminate empathetic caregiving can hurt rather than help.

As a thirteen year veteran as an elderly parent caregiver,I find that one of the biggest challenges is how to keep yourself at ease and healthy within your role.
